Father John Misty Durham reviews
Amazing Show at the Fox
I've been anticipating this show for quite some time, and made sure everything I could control was perfect. We lucked out with local street parking, got there a bit early to enjoy tacos across the street from the venue at Xolo's (highly recommended, one of my fave things about the Fox).
Extremely easy to get into the venue, the merch table was very accessible, and the bar upstairs was very efficient getting us our cocktails. I prefer the balcony instead of SRO, plus the view is spectacular.
Suki Waterhouse was the opener, and a nice surprise as her band was great.
For the Headliner, Father John Misty played most of his most popular songs, with the top hits off of his latest album sprinkled in. Always a great entertainer, he had some good short stories also sporadically placed before songs. He has such a long discography, he will play completely different sets night to night; did I hear all of my favorites? No, but there were some great surprise deeper cuts in there.
All in all, the Fox Staff is always great, Xolo's Tacos are spectacular, and FJM was off the charts!
Painful.
Father John Misty started the show by commanding the audience to stand up, which certainly boosted the energy in the room! Of course, it also totally disregarded people who specifically bought seats in the balcony so they could stay seated. People like myself who live with a spinal injury, my partner who is recovering from surgery, and I'm sure many others were faced with the choice of standing up and listening in pain for two hours or staring at the backsides of strangers for two hours, neither of which are worth the price of admission. At no point during the show did Father John Misty tell the audience they could sit back down.
On the topic of pain, the volume was painfully loud. Unpleasant and uncomfortable to be sure, but it also ruins the experience in the sense that you can't hear any nuance in any instrument when they're all cranked to 11, and none of Father John Misty's biting lyrics (the reason we love him) were at all intelligible. I'll always be a fan of the music, but this was without a doubt one of the worst concert experiences of my 20+ years attending shows.
